Like the Waves

I was watching a video message by Bill Furler, father of Peter Furler, former front-man for the Christian music group “Newsboys”.  The message was on hope.  His main text for his message was Proverbs 3:5-6, which reads, “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not to your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowlege Him, and He will direct your paths.”  Throughout the entire video message the sound of the waves continually coming ashore can be heard.  Every so often the camera is even pointed to the surf, showing the waves coming in, one by one.

I was struck by the waves.  They are just like God in a way.  They are continual, steady, predictable yet not predictable.  Strong.  Powerful.  Always there.  Beautiful.  Majestic.  Tranqil.  Overpowering.  They continue to come ashore with the tide without fail every day and every night.  Whether we are present to see them or not, they are still there.

God is like that.  In some ways we can predict Him because He has revealed parts of Himself to us in His word, but He is so unpredictable as well.  Powerful.  Steady, continual.  Dependable.  Majestic.  Beautiful.  Always there, always faithful.  Whether we are present with him and spending time with Him or not, He is still there.  He is still God.

Just as we do with the waves of the ocean, we can seek God out or we can run from Him.  Whatever we choose, He is still there.  Still steady.  He is constant.  That we can depend on.
