What Goes Around, Comes Around

Current mood:amused

I was working on unpacking some boxes in our “office” last night when I came accross something that I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was my diary from when I was in fifth grade! It was a Ramona Quimby one, and it had little stories in it as well has prompted questions to answer. There was also some space for free-journaling.

I flipped through the pages and laughed almost at everything I read there! It was so funny! Some of it I remember very well, a lot of it I had forgotten.

My daughter is thrilled at this find! She started to read it today, and every so often she is calling out in a rather excited voice comments on what she is finding. The most recent comment I loved…

“Momma! I love reading this! This is cool! Momma, you are just like me!”

And she is correct! lol I didn’t clean my room voluntarily when I was 11…and my mom had something to say about it. I had best friends and I had crushes. We had singers and tv actors who we loved…the names have changed and the faces have changed, but girls are still the same! I loved horses then, just like Emily does now. I loved animals. I loved to read and write, just as my daughter does now.

Back then I didn’t like the rules much. I wrote something to the effect that when I grew up, I would let my kids do whatever they wanted to unless it was really bad. Emily piped up with a “yeah right” over that! She said that I don’t let them do whatever they want, that I must have grown up. I told her that I love her very much, and that if I learned anything in growing up it was that boundries and rules were there to protect us, not hurt our fun!

Some of what is in there is so funny to read now, but back then it was serious to me! Emily is laughing her way through, and she kind of feels like she found a treasure chest. And in a way I guess she has. I never would have thought to show her the diary on my own. I kind of thought it would only mean something to me.

Emily’s comment that I am just like her made me think…maybe it will be a help to her as she goes through puberty and adolescence to know that I have been there done that. Maybe it will help her be more comfortable talking with me if she knows that I once thought the way she thinks and that I understand the world in a very similar manner to her.

I just hope she doesn’t tell the whole world all that she is reading! lol My brothers still are not above teasing me! lol
